You will need to base the response to this exercise on the case presented in the previous text page. For the first session, you are going to need to develop a safety plan that will give Janelle an outlet if she is feeling distressed (other than suicidal threats or behavior). Consider ways that the family may be able to identify earlier cues in the sequence so that they can come up with some actions that mom and Janelle can take that will help Janelle feel less isolated, but will also be doable for mom at this early point in treatment, because she, too, certainly has a lot of stress she is managing. Ideally, you want the safety plan to include some action that will increase mom's attention to Janelle's distress before she makes a threat or gesture.
