The proposed project focuses on paternal absence and youth gang involvement. The working hypothesis of the study is that male, adolescent-age children who are not living with or do not have a substantial relationship with their fathers are more likely to join gangs. The idea is that these children's needs for paternal support and guidance causes them to gravitate toward gangs where they can feel a sense of belonging and male camaraderie.
Data will be obtained through a community outreach program that works with gangs in an inner city neighborhood. Results will be used to help develop new intervention strategies for curbing gang violence and improving mentoring programs within the neighborhood.
