DDD10001 Introduction to Design Principles and Processes

Assessment 2: Tasks 7-12 plus written report Word limit: 3000 (+/- 10%) Weighting: 60%

Assessment overview

This assessment task requires you to apply your knowledge and understanding of design to document a concept that links design with your work or studies. The project will include a brief documentation of the design process, visualisation of the design, and designed communication through a blog, a document and a presentation.

You should start by thinking about ways that you can use your design knowledge to share your understanding of the role and value of design with your peers. Then you will use design principles to produce material that will communicate and share this information with them.

Assessment details

This assessment has two components:

1. Weekly tasks.

2. Development of a blog, presentation and documentation.

Weekly tasks

Your work in all Assessment Tasks will be individual, but you will collaborate on ideas, share feedback, and discuss your analysis and development as part of the design process.

Each week there will be 2-4 questions posted in Weekly Tasks. You should post your responses in the designated section on Discussion Board. Your response to each question is expected to be approximately 100-200 words unless directed otherwise. If the task specifies an informal response, you are not expected to reference resources beyond your weekly learning materials; if you are asked to support your response with evidence, you are required to do additional research and reading, and cite those sources in your responses.

Please note: your responses will be assessed according to the quality and your demonstrated ability to engage with and respond to the questions within the discussion board.

The weekly tasks for Weeks 7-12 form part of this assessment. The themes of each task are below. Further details will be provided in classes and included in the Weekly Tasks section on Blackboard as each week progresses.

• Task 7.1: User-centred design research (specific to Assessment 3)

• Task 7.2: Practical task (applied to Assessment 3)

• Task 8.1: Visualisation theory, tools and techniques (specific to Assessment 3)

• Task 8.2: Practical task: De Bono's Six-hats and other techniques to help them critique and improve the design of others (specific to Assessment 3)

• Task 9.1: The economics of design (specific to Assessment 3)

Blog, Presentation and Documentation Material

You are required to create a blog, and develop a presentation and documentation that communicates your understanding of design, and its role and value in 3000 words. You will create your own content and material using selected tools and choose appropriate images to accompany your written component. You can choose the format of your presentation and documentation according to what is most suitable for your area of research and your study discipline. For example, it can be in a form of a newsletter, business document, formal meeting materials or conference presentation, seminar or workshop materials or other documentation suited to your audience.
You will draw on your knowledge of design and design principles when choosing the format of your presentation and documentation, developing the content for assessment, and creating your presentation and submission.
Submission details

Please submit your assignment as a single document through via the Assessment tab on Blackboard. The submission link will be available in Week 12. Weekly tasks from your blog should be included as screen shots to make up the Appendix Blog that is part of your written report.

More detailed information will be provided on Blackboard in Weeks 9 and 11, and in weekly lectures and class discussion.

All submissions and materials must be properly referenced with in-text citations and a reference list using the Harvard referencing system.
