Assignment task:
For this assignment will conduct online research to determine whether or not genocide is occurring in one of the regions listed below. Use the information you gather AND your knowledge of the genocide convention as drafted by Raphael Lemkin. You must explain what is happening in the region you've chosen and why there is a state of concern. Make sure you identify who the people are who are being attacked and how they are defined as a "group." In what ways are they or are they not being targeted for elimination?
Obama in his speech about Syria said, "I believe that the people's representatives must be invested in what America does abroad" (Obama). What is America's historical relationship to the countries/people/regions that are directly affected? Consider the impact of what is happening, both to the people who are directly affected, and to the security of the region, the United States, and the world. Ask yourselves if or how political alliances have bearing on decisions of intervention among U.N. nations, including the U.S.
Once you determine whether or not genocide is occurring, you must then suggest a course of action for the United States. How do you interpret the genocide convention? Can or should the U.S. act alone, or does the label genocide require action only as agreed upon by member nations of the United Nations?
This paper calls for you to support your personal opinion based on the evidence you've collected, your interpretation of the genocide convention, and your determination of our obligation as a signatory nation. It must be typed in.
