Determine the theme your work will follow

Assignment task:

1. Using one of the three epigraph quotes you chose (from this sequence: the "Symbols and Allusions in Narrative" page), make a short narrative piece and based on a character (who is not the narrator, in case you're reading a first-person narration) from the novel you're reading.

2. Determine the theme your work will follow.

3. Create your first draft developing the theme.

4. Have your work reviewed and then edit it based on the feedback.

5. Use all of the various devices covered in this learning experience (metaphor, symbol, and allusion) to bring this alternate character's voice to life and express the complexity of his or her character while still remaining true to the original portrayal in the novel.

6. Be sure to use at least two symbols and two allusions in your piece and note where they are in parentheses. E.g.: My boyfriend, a real Freud, was always trying to figure me out. (allusion to Sigmund Freud). For the allusions, you might find it helpful to ask yourself, what kind of allusion would this character make?
