Determine the temperature change for the water contained in

1. A 14.325-gram silver sample was heated to 98.1 °C in a hot water bath. The metal was then placed in a calorimeter containing 45.1 mi., of water (density = 1.00 g/mL) at a temperature of 24.8 °C. The final temperature of the water and metal sample was recorded as 26.2 °C.

a. Determine the temperature change for the water contained in the calorimeter.

b. Calculate the heat absorbed by the water in the calorimeter.

c. Determine the temperature change for the metal sample.

d. Calculate the specific heat of the metal sample. Assume that the heat given away by the metal equals the heat absorbed by the water in the calorimeter.

e. Calculate the percent error for the determination of the specific heat of silver.

2. In order to calculate the specific heat of the unknown metal (smetali, 1 we assumed that all of the he released by the hot metal went into raising the temperature of the cool water. If sonic of that heat actually went into raising the temperature of the calorimeter cup, the lid, or the surrounding air instead of the cool water, the calculated smetat value would be incorrect. Would the calculated value be too high or too low? Explain your answer.

For each of the four chemicals listed below:

a. Record the HMIS health, flammability, and reactivity hazard codes

b. Read the MSDS to find the recommended personal protective equipment and first aid i. hydrochloric acid

ii. potassium chlorate

iii. solid sodium hydroxide

iv. 3.0 M sodium hydroxide solution

Use a search engine such as Google to find a free Material Safety Data Sheet (free MSDS) for one of the laboratory chemicals and one of the household chemicals listed below. Print the first page of the MSDS, and the page that shows the hazard ratings for the substance. Note: not every MSDS will list the hazards ratings in HMIS form.
