Consider a chain with length 0.8 m and mass per unit length 0.25 kg/m. Suppose it is initially suspended above a table so that the lower, free end barely touches the tabletop. At time t=0 the upper end is released from rest. Determine the force on the table as a function of the distance x that the upper end has fallen. Assume the table is energy absorbing -- the chain does not bounce as it hits the table. What is the force when one-half of the chain lies on the table?
