The aim of this investigation was to determine the effect of pH of phosphoric acid on tooth decay by measuring mass loss. The data clearly shows that as the pH decreased, the mass loss increased significantly. For example, at low pH values such as 2.0-2.5, the percentage mass loss was highest (around 5-8%), while at higher pH values (5.0-5.16), the mass loss was very low (around 0.2-0.3%). This shows a clear negative correlation between pH and tooth decay, meaning that more acidic solutions cause more damage to teeth. These results support my prediction that lower pH would lead to greater tooth decay. This is because lower pH means a higher concentration of hydrogen ions (H?), which react with the calcium phosphate (hydroxyapatite) in enamel, causing it to dissolve. Scientific research shows that enamel begins to demineralise below pH 5.5, which explains why very little mass loss occurred at higher pH values in this experiment . The results also agree with my background research. My results match both sources, as the lowest pH values caused the highest level of tooth decay. Overall, the data supports both the hypothesis and scientific theory, showing that decreasing pH significantly increases tooth decay due to increased demineralisation of enamel.
