For instance, neurologists are increasingly using brain scans to differentiate Alzheimer's disease from other forms of dementia. In a main development, government funded Medicare program now accepts PET scans as a reimbursable adjunct to Alzheimer's diagnosis. Doctors may also use scans to figure out the extent of damage to brain from stroke, head trauma, or multiple sclerosis, to characterize brain tumors, and to guide neurosurgeons operating on the brain.
