Determine sum of the normal strains x-y and z directions


It has been calculated that the critical point in a 4340 steel part is subject to a state of stress in with signma x is 6000 psi, tau xy is 4000 psi, the remaining stress components are all zero. For this state of stress, determine the sum of the normal strains x, y and z directions: that is, determine the madnitude of e1+e2+e3.
