Problem
As a member of the Ballistics Unit, you are required to attend the scene of a shooting on a farm in rural Victoria. Witnesses report hearing a single shot. You observe shotgun pellets in the side of a shed. You also observe a shotgun pellet and footprints that indicate the shooter was approximately 10 metres away when they shot at the shed.
Police find a suspect and seize the suspect's sawn-off shotgun. Later, in court, the prosecutor says to you "explain what steps you took in order to determine if this may have been the shotgun used in the shooting." How do you reply?
