On your day off, you invite your fellow officers to your wife's birthday party. You have a BBQ in the backyard. Your shift sergeant Tom, his wife Melinda, daughter Jessica, and boyfriend Jason attend the party. When walking into the house to get more paper plates, you observe Tom handing a can of beer to his daughter and her boyfriend. You know that Jessica is 15 years of age and Jason does not appear to be 21 years of age either. An hour later, you noticed that Tom and Jessica were not in the backyard, and you looked for them. You find them in the driveway smoking what appears to be marijuana.
Analyze this situation, and then prepare a report that covers the following points:
- Identify your moral and ethical duties in this scenario posed above. Highlight how they correlate with the major research surrounding ethical challenges.
- Evaluate your options for each solution and show how each option has a base in the ethical system.
- Discuss how the utilitarian and deontologist would have interpreted the situation.
- Describe how your action would be justified by the supervising Captain and determine if the actions are a violation of the officer's code of ethics.
