Design and its applications in product development process -

Identify and understand each phase of the product development process

Recognise the importance of timing, resource and skill constraints

Apply the needs of the customer to product development and communicate in various ways

Understand the critical role of testing in product development

Critically assess and evaluate vehicle concepts, systems and sub-systems

Generate new ideas about improved vehicle concepts,

systems and sub-systems and justify the advantages based on qualitative and quantitative analysis

This unit uses several elements of the new Problem Oriented Design Based Learning methodology (PODBL).

One of the key PODBL principles is that the students select a problem related to the unit that specifically interests them and that they would like to solve. Examples of such problems will be discussed during the classes (recorded and made available on CloudDeakin) and through the Deakin library including its access to a large number of databases.

The first task is to select a product, system or component that needs to be developed. The problems and issues of current solutions need to be explained including a benchmarking analysis and the boundary conditions of the selected product, system or component needs to be described. This needs to be completed individually.

Oral presentation

This includes the presentation of the targets for the new product to be developed, first draft concepts, a concept selection matrix and a first concept FMEA.
