Chapter 2 of The Developing Person through the Life Span describes five overall developmental perspectives: psychoanalytic, behaviorist, cognitive, humanistic and evolutionary/sociocultural. The psychoanalytic theory, with particular attention to the stages of Erikson, highlights the importance of early life experiences and psychosocial conflicts in the development of personality throughout the lifespan. Behaviorism concerns itself with the way learning is brought about by reinforcement and punishment by the environment. The cognitive theory is a school of thought headed by Piaget, which describes thoughts and reasoning skills development in stages as people actively build knowledge (Berger, 2021). Humanistic theory emphasizes personal growth, self-concept and the desire for self-actualization. In contrast, the evolutionary and sociocultural perspective describes the effects that such biological adaptation and cultural background have on development. The theories are complementary to each other, and they describe various dimensions of human development. Psychoanalytic and humanistic views are concerned with emotions, identity and motivation, which can make us cognize the internal experiences. The behaviorist and cognitive theories describe the way learning and thinking are influenced by both the surroundings and the inner process.
