The suggested reading and lecture slides for the course act as a starting point for the assignment, but you are also encouraged to conduct additional research using a wide range of sources. The journals listed in the module outline are relevant, but other material can also be used.
You work for an HR consulting company. Our client is a company with offices in Dusseldorf, Germanyand in Edmonton, Canada. The company knows nothing about international human resource management and needs your help! The company designs products and produces them. There are two departments: Product design and manufacturing.
1. Analyze the company environment in each city and based on your analysis decide in which of the two locations to place the product design department, and in which to place the manufacturing department.
2. Define what a suitable organizational culture would look like for our organization
3. Write job advertisements (including salary information) for recruiting a local product designer and a local manufacturing worker.
4. Based on our company culture, how can we select from the pool of applicants those who would fit well with our company and its values?
5. Define SMART goals for our new employee in manufacturing and our new product designer.
6. Assess which (national) cultural differences we would expect when people from the two locations work together.
7. Suppose that we want to send the graphic designer on an expatriate assignment for 1 year to work in the manufacturing department. Our designer is married, she/he is a single parent with 2 children aged 7 and 11. Assuming the annual salary from point 3., develop an expatriate proposal that is attractive for the designer as well as for our company.
8. Describe why diversity is important for the company and develop a plan for more diversity among employees.
