In this discussion post, we ask you to think about what kinds of stereotypes we hold regarding men and women's behaviors, including linguistic behavior. Please try not to think about individual stereotypes of men/women you know; rather, think more at the larger level of men and women. For example, a common stereotype in the US is that boys don't cry. This stereotype is connected to other ideas and beliefs about boys, men, and masculinity. It is an enduring stereotype or belief. In your posts, do not use the boys don't cry example.
In your Discussion Post describe two stereotypes for women and two stereotypes for men. One stereotype should specifically be about behavior and one should specifically be about language (how people speak, write, use language specifically). Then, state whether or not you have ever observed the stereotyped behavior and language you gave as your examples. Finally, choose one of the examples and explain how you think this stereotype came to be. That is, explain how we can understand that this stereotype exists; to do this, you will need to explain the underlying ideas and beliefs about men/women that normalize the stereotype chosen. We are not asking you to comment on the truth value of the stereotype, just how this stereotype came to be and is generally accepted.
