Individual identity focuses on the individual's perception of self and answers the question "Who am I?" In contrast, professional identity answers the question "Who do I want to become?"P rofessional identity is a set of core values, assumptions, and the scope of practice about a profession. It serves as a frame of reference from which one follows ethical codes, carries out a professional role, makes professional decisions, and grows as a professional (Brott & Myers, 1999). Three core concepts of professional identity are self-labeling, integration of professional skills and attitudes, and context of the professional community (Gibson, Dollarhide, & Moss,2010). It is important to establish a definitive professional identity and to recognize the limits of the scope of practice defined by statutes and regulations.
