Aristotle's Approach to Moral Judgment
According to Aristotle, virtue always lies at the mean between vicious extremes. Too much or too little of anything is invariably mistaken, but acting moderately is usually the path to happiness. Let us examine this approach to ethics by testing it in application to specific examples of two distinct kinds.
In your substantive post for this discussion, describe two concrete situations from your own personal or professional life:
• One in which Aristotle's theory clearly seems to be on the right track.
• Another where it gives the wrong advice.
In the first case, moderation would make sense, but in the second, you see how one of the extremes seems more virtuous.
