Presentation Title: Laboratory Services
Objective:
To explore non-traditional healthcare-related sites and/or businesses in which health information managers may find opportunities for employment by conducting a Zoom, face-to-face, or phone interview with a healthcare professional in an alternative setting.
Interview Information:
Interview a professional who works in a distinct alternative healthcare setting, preferably with education or background in Health Information Management, however, this is not required. The interviewee must be able to provide adequate details for the required content to share with the class in a presentation.
Assignment Interview:
1. Please introduce the site (Include the name of the site, type of facility/business, location, and the name and job title of the person interviewed.
2. Can you tell us about the laboratory services provided at the site?
3. Can you describe the types of patients or customers served by the laboratory?
4. How is health information managed at the laboratory? Is it maintained in paper, hybrid, or electronic format?
5. Can you explain the roles and responsibilities of the healthcare providers involved in documentation throughout the continuum of care for a patient?
6. Can you walk us through the documentation requirements from admission to discharge for a patient?
7. Does the laboratory currently employ any credentialed HIM professionals, such as RHIT, RHIA, or CCS? If so, what are their roles? If not, who maintains the health information?
8. What advancements do you anticipate in managing health information over the next three to five years?
9. What qualities are important to possess in order to work in this type of setting?
10. What makes this laboratory unique?
11. Would you recommend this laboratory as a place for future employment, and why or why not?
12. Can you discuss the Quality Improvement and Clinical Documentation Integrity processes in place at the laboratory?
13. How has the laboratory been impacted by COVID-19, and what hardships have you faced?
14. Can you compare and contrast this laboratory to another type of facility, such as a dialysis center versus an eye clinic?
