Problem: The minimal correlation between IQ and GPA may arise from restricted variability in our sample's predictors (Coyle, 2015; Dennis et al., 2009). Modest dispersion in IQ scores, combined with an uneven age distribution, can obscure the differences in ability that typically emerge in more diverse age groups (Reynolds et al., 1987). Furthermore, the university admission process often selects for a minimum level of cognitive ability, which likely compresses the range of both IQ and GPA.
