Problem: In 1675, R. T. wrote a letter to a Mr. R. A. describing "the art of good husbandry, or the improvement of time: being a sure way to get and keep money."1 In this letter, R. T. discusses several rules for merchants, shopkeepers, "mechanicks," tradesmen, and others to follow in order to use time to their advantage for themselves and families. He describes the loss of a man's time, which includes time spent in taverns, coffeehouses, or alehouses, as "the sole cause of poverty in this city and nation." This citation possibly may be one of the earliest that begins to describe the importance of time management.
