Two factors that affect population size are the individual factors that contribute to both immigration and emigration (local economy, professional opportunities, costs of living, etc...). These factors influence the size of the population by influencing whether people want to continue living where they currently reside or move somewhere else. Emigration is a large issue in my state, West Virginia, as our state's population is declining primarily due to a lack of job opportunities after many coal mines began shutting down.
