During the course of his presidency, Jimmy Carter at one point suggested that the international prominence enjoyed by the United States since World War II may have come to an end. Describe the economic developments that could have prompted Carter (and subsequent presidents) to reach this conclusion and analyze their effects on his/their presidency. Discuss whether or not this "international prominence" exists today for the United States.
