Conflict in the workplace can result in loss of time, effort, and talent. According to studies, the vast majority of surveyed people have witnessed "uncivil" incidents at work. Half the people surveyed had considered changing jobs because of such incidents and an astonishing 1 in 8 people had actually left a company because of rude incidents. We are also seeing an increasing number of violent acts, even murder, in the workplace. Managing issues before they escalate into more serious situations is more important now than ever before.

1) Think of a conflict that took place where you work or where a friend or family member works.

a) Describe the conflict. What took place? What caused the conflict?
b) How was the conflict resolved? If the conflict was not resolved, why was it not?

2) Assume you are the manager. What improved communication techniques would help to avoid workplace conflicts?
