Assignment 1: Discussion-The Uninsured and Employer-Sponsored Health Insurance

Many people are offered health insurance coverage through their employers. This is noted as Employer Sponsored Health Insurance (ESHI). Due to economic downturns and rising health insurance costs, employers were unable to offer their workers coverage. As a result, the number of uninsured people in America rose to 49.1 million in 2010 because many workers did not have access to ESHI.

On March 23, 2010, President Obama signed the Affordable Care Act (ACA). The law puts in place comprehensive health insurance reforms that will roll out over four years and beyond (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2014). Part of the intent of the Affordable Care Act was to increase coverage for young adults, end arbitrary insurance coverage withdrawal, and to optimize dollars spent on health care and less on administrative costs. Ongoing debate surrounds if the ACA is more or less beneficial to employees with some purporting employers will drop employees from ESHI and force them to enroll in programs under the ACA.

- U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. (n.d.). About the law. Retrieved from https://www.hhs.gov/healthcare/rights/
In this assignment, you will research and describe the association between the uninsured population and employer-sponsored health insurance (ESHI). You will further compare and contrast any potential influence of the Affordable Care Act upon employer and employee decision making about ESHI.

Using the required readings for this module and your own research, complete the following:

- Describe the characteristics of the uninsured in your state.

- Discuss at least one type of health insurance structure in detail. Do you prefer the health insurance structure that you identified? Give reasons for your answer. Explain in detail any health-policy issue related to health insurance.

- Describe the purpose of ESHI. Include the following in your description:

o Costs and trends of ESHI in your state.

o Any correlation that may exist between the trends in ESHI and the plight of the uninsured in your state.

o Any influence of the Affordable Care Act upon the numbers of uninsured or underinsured in your state.

o Discuss potential benefits and risks to both the employer and the employee.

Write your initial response in 200-300 words. Apply APA standards to citation of sources.

Assignment 2: Required Assignment-Case Memo: PPACA (ACA)

The Patient Protection and Affordable Act (PPACA) of 2010 was created to improve/increase access to healthcare coverage for all Americans. The law was enacted in two parts: The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, which was signed into law on March 23, 2010. The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act was amended by the Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act on March 30, 2010. The name Affordable Care Act refers to the final, amended version of the law (Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Service, HealthCare.gov, n.d.). The goal of the PPACA (Affordable Care Act) is to reduce the number of uninsured people in the United States.

Review the following:

- The U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. (n.d.). Affordable care act. Retrieved from https://www.healthcare.gov/glossary/affordable-care-act/

Using the module readings, Argosy University online library resources, and the Internet, research the ACA. Then, write a research paper explaining your analysis of the ACA in detail. In your analysis, include your responses to the following:

- Summarize the public problem that led to the passage of the PPACA.

- Research factors leading to the amendment of the PPACA.

- Describe the goals and intent of ACA.

- Analyze the financing of the ACA.

- Determine the ACA's targeted beneficiaries.

- Analyze the ACA's implications on population health.

- Determine your home state's perspective on the ACA.

- Explain whether your state supports the ACA, and discuss the reasons for the support or opposition.

- Assess the potential challenges or unintended consequences that may occur as a result of the ACA.

Write a 5-6-page paper in Word format. Apply APA standards to citation of sources. Utilize at least 4-5 scholarly sources in your research. Your paper should be written in a clear, concise, and organized manner; demonstrate ethical scholarship in accurate representation and attribution of sources; and display accurate spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
