To manage fears of spreading Communism at home and abroad, historians argue the 1950s was dominated by the, "three c's," conformism, consumerism and containment, all broadcast on the new media, television. Too many historians continue to ignore a critical "4th c" which is civil rights
1. conformism - tremendous cultural stress on appearing and acting like others. Individualism was questioned as subversive and potentially dangerous.
2. consumerism - increased buying of manufactured goods seen as beneficial to the economy which proved the superiority of American capitalism to Soviet communism
3. containment - a foreign policy plan in America post-WWII that involved the US vowing to prevent the spread of communism
4. civil rights - Democrats' continued backing of Southern segregation; beginning of Northerners' demand Constitutional rights for Southern African-Americans
