Describe socio-cultural theory

Assignment:

Socio-Cultural Scaffolding

Assignment Description

This activity is an opportunity to apply Socio-cultural theory and the concept of guided participation/intent community participation discussed in class with real children/adolescents. Specifically, you will use the zone of proximal development and scaffolding procedures to teach someone a novel task, game or activity, or how to solve a problem. In this write-up you will provide an explanation of the theoretical ideas, describe the child or children who participated (age, gender, ethnicity), the task/activity/game/problem you taught the child, how you scaffold the task, how the child reacted, and how well the child learned the task. Note, in particular, the use of language during the learning process and anything that did not work well or that you would need to alter in the future to improve learning.

Guideline for writing paper

This paper follows the same format as the previous paper, but now for a different theory and task.

Title of Paper (introduction & background section)

Introductory paragraph. Be sure to have an introductory paragraph that captures the topic and purpose of paper like in the previous paper.

Background/literature . . . (1.5 to 2 pages organized in multiple paragraphs to describe the below).

• Describe Socio-cultural theory in your own way (begin by describing culture/cultural knowledge). Cite the sources of your information as you describe the theory.

• Your description should NOT duplicate what the textbook says ("Socio-cultural theory has 2 central themes," this is just how the authors of the text try to interpret and describe the theory. You should describe the theory in your own way).Be sure to explain how the different ideas of the theory work together (Use transitions between paragraphs and Do no begin each paragraph with, "Another idea from the theory is ...").

• Define terms related to the theory (CITE when you do this)

• Use transitions to connect ideas together to show that this is a coherently organized theory and help the flow of your paper.

• Include a description of techniques for scaffolding children's learning and how to work within the child's zone of proximal development when introducing a novel task.

• Use the additional readings appropriately textbook and assigned articles. DO NOT cite lecture.

• Introduce the task you are going to teach. Including your own background with the task (specifically what was the process you went through to learn the task).

• Describe the significance of your task to the skills needed to be a participant in a given culture.

Method

Procedure

Describe the different levels of scaffoldingyou plan to use and how you will work within the child's zone of proximal development (including how you assessed the child's initial capabilities for the task).Your levels should be types of behaviors that range from most support to least support. DO NOT describe how to do the task or a step-by-step procedure.

Results& Discussion

Cover the following information in a multi-paragraph result and discussion section

• (What did you find?) Describe what observations you made throughout the activity, as the child masters the novel task you chose.

• Describe how the child reacted to the different levels of scaffolding and how well the child learned.

• Note the use of language during the social interaction and internalization processes.

• Connect your findings in terms of the principles of Socio-cultural theory, guided participation/intent community participation, and working within the zone of proximal development. CITE when you make these connections.

• Discuss how things went in your lesson, anything that worked particularly well AND what you would change to improve learning (DO NOT say I would change nothing. You can always improve things).

• Reflect on what you gained/learned during the course of this assignment.
