A. Describe the processes by which chemical and mechanical digestion occurs in the stomach of adults and infants. Include in your answer any anatomy that aids in mechanical digestion, and any chemicals and/or enzymes that aid in chemical digestion. In addition to digestive chemicals, mention at least 3 hormones or hormone-like chemicals that participate in the control/regulation of digestion in the stomach, and explain how these hormones help to regulate digestion.
B. Describe the roles that that the liver, gallbladder and pancreas play in digestion of lipids, carbohydrates and proteins. Include digestive chemicals or enzymes, where they are produced, and what their digestive functions are. Using your knowledge of anatomy of the G.I. tract, explain these chemicals get to the small intestine, which is actually where the digestion occurs?
C. List the digestive enzymes that are produced in the small intestine, and tell me which type of nutrient (lipid, carbohydrate, nucleic acid, protein) they digest. List two hormones secreted by the enteroendocrine cells of the small intestine and explain what happens when they bind to receptors on their target tissues.
