The 1775-1782 rebellion of the thirteen North American colonies is fundamentally similar to the 1860-1865 rebellion of the eleven slave-holding states of the American South, in that both rebellions were led by a slaveholding oligarchy who wanted to protect their power from an increasingly abolitionist central government (i.e. the British Empire after the 1772 case of Somerset v Stewart and the U.S. Federal Government after the election of Abraham Lincoln in 1860).
