My ?interest ?in ?psychology ?and ?the ?criminal ?justice ?system ?began ?when ?I ?was ?13 ?years ?old. ?I ?would ?watch ?a ?show ?called ?Beyond ?Scared ?Straight, ?which ?was ?cases ?of ?children ?in ?probation ?programs. ??The ?adults ?in ?the ?show ?worked ?with ?these ?children ?to ?help ?them ?make ?better ?decisions ?and ?improve ?their ?futures. ?Watching ?this ?made ?me ?realize ?that ?this ?was ?something ?I ?wanted ?to ?do ?as ?well. ?I ?was ?attracted ?to ?the ?idea ?that ?providing ?guidance ?and ?support ?could ?truly ?shape ?a ?persons ?life. ?From ?that ?point ?on, ?I ?knew ?I ?wanted ?to ?become ?a ?juvenile ?correction ?counselor. ?Years ?later, ?when ?I ?was ?17 ?I ?decided ?to ?gain ?experience ?in ?a ?similar ?work ?environment ?to ?see ?if ?this ?was ?truly ?my ?passion. ?I ?worked ?at ?a ?community ?park ?with ?kids, ?where ?I ?developed ?skills ?in ?many ?areas ?such ?as ?communication, ?patience, ?and ?conflict ?solving. ?This ?experience ?became ?one ?of ?my ?favorite ?jobs, ?as ?I ?enjoyed ?building ?connections ?with ?the ?children. ?I ?have ?often ?been ?told ?by ?many ?people ?that ?I ?am ?good ?at ?making ?others ?feel ?comfortable ?and ?understood ?which ?is ?why ?I ?connect ?with ?young ?people ?so ?well. ?I ?believe ?this ?is ?an ?essential ?quality ?for ?anyone ?wanting ?to ?pursue ?a ?career ?as ?a ?counselor In ?addition ?to ?my ?work ?experience, ?I ?also ?grew ?up ?in ?a ?hands-on ?environment ?that ?exposed ?me ?to ?the ?realities ?of ?crime ?at ?a ?young ?age. ?My ?neighborhood ?in ?South ?Central ?Los ?Angeles ?is ?known ?for ?its ?high ?crime ?rates, ?and ?I ?witnessed ?how ?some ?of ?my ?classmates ?and ?people ?I ?grew ?up ?around ?became ?involved ?in ?serious ?legal ?trouble. ?These ?experiences ?shaped ?the ?person ?I ?wanted ?to ?become. ?I ?knew ?I ?did ?not ?want ?to ?follow ?that ?path. ?Instead, ?I ?wanted ?to ?encourage ?and ?motivate ?others ?to ?make ?better ?choices. ?I ?strongly ?believe ?that ?the ?environment ?you ?are ?born ?into ?does ?not ?define ?who ?you ?are ?or ?who ?you ?can ?become, ?and ?that ?with ?guidance ?and ?support, ?change ?is ?always ?possible. ?These ?experiences ?have ?also ?strengthened ?my ?ability ?to ?work ?with ?individuals ?from ?diverse ?cultural ?and ?socioeconomic ?backgrounds, ?which ?is ?essential ?when ?working ?with ?youth ?in ?the ?justice ?system. As ?a ?senior ?at ?California ?State ?University, ?Dominguez ?Hills, ?majoring ?in ?Psychology ?with ?a ?minor ?in ?Criminal ?Justice, ?I ?have ?developed ?a ?deeper ?understanding ?of ?behavior, ?emotions, ?and ?the ?factors ?that ?influence ?decision-making. ?Through ?my ?coursework, ?I ?have ?learned ?that ?many ?young ?individuals ?are ?shaped ?by ?their ?environments, ?experiences, ?and ?the ?challenges ?they ?face. ?This ?has ?helped ?me ?view ?youth ?involved ?in ?the ?justice ?system ?with ?more ?empathy ?and ?understanding, ?rather ?than ?judgment. ?My ?Criminal ?Justice ?studies ?have ?also ?given ?me ?insight ?into ?how ?the ?legal ?system ?works, ?including ?probation ?programs ?and ?the ?importance ?of ?rehabilitation. ?Together, ?my ?academic ?background ?has ?prepared ?me ?with ?the ?knowledge ?and ?perspective ?needed ?to ?support ?and ?guide ?youth ?toward ?making ?better ?choices. ?This ?combination ?of ?education ?and ?experience ?has ?strengthened ?my ?commitment ?to ?pursuing ?a ?career ?as ?a ?juvenile ?correction ?counselor. My ?goal ?is ?to ?become ?a ?juvenile ?correction ?counselor ?and ?work ?within ?a ?probation ?department ?where ?I ?can ?make ?a ?meaningful ?impact ?on ?the ?lives ?of ?young ?individuals. ?I ?want ?to ?use ?both ?my ?personal ?experiences ?and ?my ?academic ?background ?to ?guide ?youth ?toward ?making ?better ?decisions ?and ?creating ?a ?more ?positive ?future ?for ?themselves. ?I ?am ?passionate ?about ?helping ?others ?recognize ?their ?potential ?and ?understand ?that ?their ?past ?or ?environment ?does ?not ?define ?who ?they ?can ?become. ?Overall, ?I ?am ?committed ?to ?making ?a ?difference ?by ?providing ?support, ?guidance, ?and ?encouragement ?to ?those ?who ?need ?it ?most.
