Problem: A topic of importance to African-American writing is that of identity, more particularly, the relationship of individual identity to community identity, whether that community be one's family, one's culture, or one's nation. Such multiple relationships, in which one tries to develop an identity, or clear sense of self, may produce conflict. Select any single reading assignment that you think best represents conflict caused by the author, speaker, narrator, character, etc. attempting to be true to both individual identity and community identity. Illustrate your claim by noting at least three examples of that conflict.
