Discussion Post: Local liberalism
We compared rural communities of Veracruz and Yucatán according to how they interpreted early 19-th century liberalism. Chassen-López will discuss changes in liberalism towards the end of the 19th century, and continued rural and Indigenous reactions to the same. This will set us up to talk about the dictatorship of Porfirio Díaz (1876-1911), the topic of the next two weeks.
Task: Discussing campesino (rural subsistence farmer) repertoires of collective action, Chassen-López describes "informal negotiations, litigation, political action, patronage, defiance, and finally, violence" (2004: 330) as options.
In your post, describe how two of these options were used in the Juchitán case that the author discusses.
