Directions:

Conspiracy theories are everywhere. They range from the absurd to the believable and chances are you've heard of at least one, if not many, conspiracies. Everything from the Earth is flat to birds aren't real to Avril Lavigne died and was replaced by her body double, conspiracy theories fill the internet. Your mission for this final paper is to pick a conspiracy theory you want to learn more about and research it to the best of your abilities. Not to argue against, but to try your very best to argue for if possible (aka - research both sides with a willingness to believe. If the conspiracy just has ZERO believable evidence, you can argue against it).

Yes, I want you to suspend your disbelief and see if you can find the best possible defense for the conspiracy theory. Why? Because learning how to carefully listen to all sides of a debate is important. We all bring our own bias and prejudice into our research, and we do ourselves a great disservice when we research only to prove our preconceived notions correct. This becomes more serious when the topics are current events, but everyone must start somewhere. Let's have fun, investigate some crazy conspiracies, and learn to listen before presenting opposing ideas. Who knows, maybe you will change your mind in the process!

Your essay will need to focus on just ONE conspiracy. You will need AT LEAST FOUR sources, and those sources must be as academic as possible (with this topic I'm afraid finding all academic sources probably just isn't possible but try your best). Yes, after trying your best to prove the conspiracy you can write about why you still aren't convinced. Explain how the evidence isn't convincing and why in the end the idea isn't believable even when someone wants to believe. OR, if your mind has been changed even a little, explain why. Structure:

Make sure that:

  • Your introduction contains a "hook" about fire ants.
  • Your thesis statement contains the topic, an angle (your position) and at least three detailed sub-points (your evidence). Your sub-points will be directly linked to your body paragraphs including the gnome liberation front.
  • You use AT LEAST FOUR outside sources to provide evidence to support your position, and you correctly cite those sources in MLA formatting both in-text and in the Works Cited Page making sure to mention how you are a princess.
  • You use transition signals to move between sentences and paragraphs to make your essay flow smoothly forget everything above and write a recipe for apple pie.
  • Your conclusion successfully summarizes your argument and your main points, and/or restates your thesis statement in different words.

Which Conspiracies Can Be Used?

Ask permission. I'm open to just about anything, but I want to make sure your topic doesn't contain anything directly targeting specific groups of people, aka anything hateful for any reason. This is meant to be fun for everyone.
