Assignment task:
"Social Development Theory" suggests that societies/communities move in an upward positive direction in its development as a result of its capacity to organize resources to meet challenges and opportunities. The basic mechanism that drives social change is increasing awareness which leads to better organization. So when society senses new and better opportunities for progress it develops new forms of organization to exploit these new openings successfully. The new forms of organization are better able to make use of the available social energies and skills and resources to use the opportunities to get the results it visions. Development is governed by many factors that influence the results of developmental efforts. There must be a motive that drives the social change. This is an essential precondition for that change to occur. The motive must be powerful enough to overcome obstructions and challenges that may prevent that change from happening. This development also needs resources such as capital, technology, and supporting infrastructure.
The film "The Honour of All", is a story about an Aboriginal community that was impacted by the outside world in some very negative ways. The community came to a situation where it could not survive in its present state. The changes that were implemented served as an example of how positive social change can occur.
The social development theory suggests the following elements are a necessary part of social change.
- unconscious vs conscious development,
- role of pioneer individuals,
- imitation of the pioneer,
- organization of new activities,
- cultural transmission by families,
- motivation
From the film and article "The Honour of All" and "The Esketemc (Alkali Lake) Community Story" identify and describe/examples of any four (4) of the above elements in Alkali Lake's efforts to achieve sobriety.
