As a practicum and internship student in counseling, I have identified the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC) as a professional organization to join. The NBCC plays a prominent role in professional counseling credentialing by administering national certifications, including the National Certified Counselor (NCC), and by maintaining ethical and professional practice standards. A student membership offers access to resources such as certification preparation materials, professional development opportunities, and information regarding licensure requirements and regulatory expectations.
A current issue in the counseling profession is licensure portability, especially the movement toward greater consistency in state licensure standards. Inconsistent licensure requirements restrict counsel's mobility and limit client access to care. NBCC's advocacy for uniform credentialing practices demonstrates the direct impact of public policy on counselor practice, workforce mobility, and service delivery (Kaplan & Gladding, 2011).
