Write a Journal Assignment Throughout the semester, as students learn about the convergence of race, ethnicity, and gender in human services, they will be required to maintain a record of situations in which their values have influenced or guided their actions. Students may include examples from their personal and professional lives. For example, I was working with a college student who was depressed with her mother, who had been pressuring her about academic success, financial independence, chores, etc. Students must have at least 5 entries, but are strongly encouraged to document as many situations as possible. Identifying how values and beliefs guide our actions can increase self-awareness, foster growth, and enhance understanding and empathy for clients. Additionally, knowing our values can help us to avoid imposing them on clients (since this is unethical!)
