Essay Assignment
I. Identify and describe the characteristics of artistic style of the Roman culture, especially the developments that differentiate Roman art from Greek. Focus on Imperial period sculpture, architecture, and painting, but examples from the Republican era can also be used. Begin by identifying the major of characteristics of style that are distinctive Roman developments, then describe each characteristic, and finally give example(s) of each characteristic from the Roman art we've studied.
II. Identify and compare/contrast the characteristics of Romanesque and Gothic architecture. Begin by identifying the major characteristics for each style, then use your list of characteristics to explain the differences and similarities in the buildings of the periods, and finally give example(s) of each characteristic from the architecture that we've studied.
