Problem 1: An illness narrative that ethnographically describes Anorexia and bulimia: introduce the narrative. Set the scene (i.e., medical, social, personal, political, moral, or cultural context) and introduce the main character and their health condition through your storytelling.
Problem 2: Develop the narrative. What event(s) shaped the trajectory of the illness experience? For example, a medical encounter, a successful or failed treatment, changing symptoms, social backgrounds, or histories. What fields or actors (e.g., doctors, nurses, other patients, family members, institutions, markets, technologies) played a prominent role in the way the illness unfolded?
Problem 3: Analyze the narrative in relation to other texts. Connect the experience being described to bigger questions or concepts. Why is this story interesting? How is this health experience shaped by factors such as gender, race, sexuality, class, and age? How is this health experience shaped by global and local cultural, social, political, and economic contexts? What are the implications of this story for our understandings of culture, illness, and healing? Choose an idea to reflect on (e.g., what's at stake in how a person has come to understand their situation), or explicitly draw out a theme that may have been implicit throughout the piece (e.g., how this experience is impacted by or refract larger social worlds; how different understandings of medicine/care are entangled).
