Problem:
During the pandemic, suicide rates went up in many communities, including here in New Mexico. The type of suicide that I feel helps explain this rise is Anomic suicide a theory created by Émile Durkheim. This occurs when someone takes their own life when society is going through a major disruption that will throw off people's sense of stability. This can happen due to job loss, financial stress, and isolation from the lockdown. This left people feeling like they had no direction or support and without routine and human connection it became harder to cope. That is why I think anomic suicide is more related to the increased rate rather than egoistical suicide. Because the increased rate appears to have expanded from the societal changes rather than the disconnection and isolation from, while yes, being cut off from others may have contributed to the problem, the bigger issue was the instability in society, and losing that sense of balance and predictability is what pushed so many people into more distress.
