Problem: The Maconachy-Schou-Ragsdale (MSR) model describes the three states of information (storage, transmission, and processing); three essential countermeasures (technology, policy, and people); and five basic services (availability, integrity, authentication, confidentiality, and nonrepudiation). The interaction among these services, states, and countermeasures yield a field of responsibility for senior executives and managers. Information assurance, information security, information protection, and cybersecurity fall within this field of responsibility. Confidentiality, integrity, and availability are frequently referred to as the CIA triad. The MSR model and CIA triad generally apply to the information assurance discipline as a reference model for policy, processes, procedures, and standards implemented in an information assurance program.
