Describe and analyze the impact of the spanish conquest on

Question One: Describe and analyze the impact of the Spanish conquest on New Mexico and California Native Americans or First Peoples.

Write at least 400 words, use the primary and secondary sources and footnotes.

Read Lecture One and the short primary source in E-Reserves: "The Requirement." Also read Chapter One in Kessell's Kiva, Cross and Crown about the plight of Pecos Indians when the Spaniards arrived in what is now the state of New Mexico and Santos's lecture on the California missions.

To answer the question, do the following:

1. Describe Spain's approach to its colonization of the Southwest and California. What did Spain "require" of the natives? What specifically did the explorer Juan de Oñate force the natives to do? What did the California missionaries do to the natives?

2. How did the natives respond? Were they friendly at first, or were they suspicious, fought back or hid from the terrifying guns and vicious dogs? In New Mexico, what was Pueblo Revolt and how successful was it?

3. Assess the consequences for the Native Americans and the Spaniards. What was the death toll for the natives in North America and then in California?

4. Then, think about this and give your ideas: What does it take to create and sustain a tolerant society?

Question Two: Assessing the Geomorphic Provinces and Climate of the American West
