Describe an interaction you've had with a stranger that left a significant impact on your life
During my summer break of 7th grade, I had a chance to join the medical volunteering trip to Indonesia. The volunteering was planned by 4 dentists including my mother and 2 pharmacists. On the second day of our arrival while we were searching for translator who can speak English, we luckily met a Korean missionary who had lived there for more than 20 years. He had designated his life building a school and medical center for native Indonesians. With the missionary's help and translation, we could diagnose and help most of native people within a week. On the last day, I had a chance to speak with him personally. His story still holds me tight to be a pharmacist.
Since South Korea was underdeveloped after Korean War, he was grown up in poor family. Both his parents and sister passed away from tuberculosis when he was about to graduate college and away from home. After that, he decided to live for people who cannot live under health and educational benefits. He, then, came to Indonesia and built 4 schools and 2 public medical center in underdeveloped island in Indonesia for 20 years. Although he was 48 years old, he wanted to study medicines only because he wanted to help more people. His story left a significant impact on me.
Pharmacist had been always my dream job, but I had never thought about what I could do after I become a pharmacist. I wanted to be a pharmacist because pharmacist is respected job and medicines were interesting to me. After I went to Indonesia and met the missionary, there was significant reason added why I want to be a pharmacist. I want to directly communicate and provide services to people no matter who they are. The missionary left a huge impact on my life and set my goal to be a community pharmacist. The memory of the volunteering trip in 2004 still backs up my dream to be a pharmacist.
