Hazmat management starts with the control of the hazardous waste or materials. Having the right processes in place to ensure that there is never a hazmat incident is important. Employees must be educated on all of the rules and regulations that govern the waste or materials they are going to be responsible for. Also, companies need to prepare for incidents by having plans and having exercises to ensure their employees understand what to do to mitigate the incident without putting themselves in more danger. Hazmat incident management comes into play when an incident happens; how well the incident is managed and all of the proper processes done in the correct order.

This will ensure no one is injured or killed and the incident is controlled without spreading. The first thing is for the person that identified the hazmat incident to assess the situation. They need to figure out what the materials or waste that is involved, what personal protective equipment, and what withdraw distance is required. At the same time they need to call for help. A hazmat team may be required to clean up the mess.

I know in the Air Force we deal with explosives every day and we have a checklist that we follow if something happens. These checklists ensure everyone is safe and the right people are notified to resolve the incident. Management needs to give these checklists to their employees and make sure the employees know how to use them. These checklists might just save someone life or the company from getting a bigger fine.

Part 2

Hazmat management is based on an overall management program of hazardous materials of an organization or business. Hazmat incident management refers to managing an incident where a hazardous materials calamity has taken place. It could have been initiated from a chemical leak or spill during any phase of the production, transportation or storage of hazardous materials. Even though both terms seem similar, their meanings are different.

Hazardous Management involves the supervision or controlling of hazardous materials at a chemical plant or job site. The organization's goal is often to protect employees from misfortunes while they are handling hazardous materials. This includes the establishing of safety procedures that protects during procurement, transporting, storage, and disposal of certain hazardous materials. A hazardous material can also be viewed as any items that pose a health hazard or physical hazards such as carcinogens, combustible liquids or other chemicals that produce gases; fumes; etc.

Hazmat management also includes safety measures to ensure hazardous materials are used in a safe manner and stored in approved containers and/or locations. Hazardous management is the cornerstone of health and safety, which provides key tools for meeting employer obligations to take all the necessary steps to prevent harm or injury. Managers are also responsible for identifying potential hazards related to the production, handling, storage, and use of hazardous materials.

On the other hand, hazardous material incident management is the response taken normally by emergency response personnel when they arrive at the scene of a disastrous incident. The top leadership is often the incident commander who is responsible for the safety of emergency response personnel, emergency medical services, and or the citizens that may have been exposed to the hazardous material during the incident.

Although, there is a clear distinction between hazmat management and hazmat incident management to be successful at both are based on proper protocols and procedures being followed to mitigate risk and save lives.
