At the very beginning of the story, the tree hates itself because it's not like the others. It's twisted, and because of this, it's negative, depressive, and its thoughts are defeatist. It feels like a victim. Following the child's passage and words, the tree is stunned. It's delighted by the unusual shape of its branches and admires its slightly arched trunk.
When we're different from the rest of society, the negative is what first jumps out at us. But sometimes, with the help of a friend or the passage of time, our perspective changes.
