When serving the public in a social work role, there are many instances where people are met with violations to our human rights. Social workers are found in schools, hospitals, and in the public setting. In the criminal justice system, a social worker who serves as a probation officer oversees clients who are on parole or probation. They are responsible for making sure clients follow court-mandated guidelines. For instance, a probation officer may be forced to impose stringent guidelines on a person from a marginalized background, even when they are aware that these requirements violate their right to fair treatment and dignity and are disproportionately harsh for that community. The client's human rights may be jeopardized by the tension between the role's obligation to uphold rules and the social work ideal of social justice, particularly when coupled with structural problems like racism or poverty. A social worker on probation might witness conflict on ethics in the justice system. While some rights are respected as they are mandated by the legal system, people could face ethical violations of those rights due to biases. A core value listed in the code of ethics is service. (Code of ethics, et al 2021, sec. 3, para 2) Sometimes people who are in the system don't live that way. Marginalized individuals can be the main targets for these violations. An example of this would be to with hold information from clients or engage in exploitative behavior but become emotionally involved with the client.
