(a) Derive an expression for the optimum value of the avalanche gain opt M for which the signalto-noise ratio (SNR) becomes optimum by using the following expression for the excess noise factor: Fa( M)=KM+ (1-K ) (2-1/M). Assume that M^3 >> M .

(b) A silicon APD ( 0.3 A k = ) with negligible dark current operates in a system with bandwidth 50MHz . If the load resistance is 63.5 Ohms and the photocurrent before gain is 10-7 A at a temperature of 18 C o , determine the SNR improvement, in dB, between M =1 and
opt M = Mopt.
