Demonstrate water engineering fundamentals

Learning Outcomes:

1: Design, with the assistance of computer models, complex networks for the distribution of water

2: Demonstrate a thorough understanding of water engineering fundamentals

3: Demonstrate discipline knowledge and capabilities appropriate to the level of study.

4: Use oral, written and interpersonal communication to inform, motivate and effect change.

5: Create solutions to authentic (real world and ill-defined) problems.

After the completion of the design of the water treatment solution for CSGWater and the distribution network for the new development of Kamelat, your manager has determined that there may be value in providing an unsolicited proposal for the development of a sewer collection system for Kamelat to CSG water. Your task then is to develop the proposal based on the information you have been given in previous assessment tasks.

Your manager has suggested that the sewer network design should contain strictly six horizontal and two vertical lines along H and V streets respectively to collect sanitary flow from the whole development. Minimum and maximum depths of sewer obverts are 1.5 and 2m respectively. All sub-catchments below H11 are vacant lands and no need to be sewered at this stage. The free fall outlet of the Kamelat sewer system should be located in the end of V2 at a maximum depth of 2.5 m. After discussions with CSGWater they have indicated they may be interested in the proposal provided it meets the following requirements:

  • Suitability of Proposed Solution: CSGWater will consider the proposal based on the suitability of the proposed solution/layout in terms of ensuring the entire development can be serviced economically and reliably.
  • Suitability of Design: CSGWater will consider the proposal based on the suitability of the designed sewer in terms of pipe sizes and materials.
  • Understanding of the Sewer Model: CSGWater will consider the proposal based on the ability of the designer to clearly explain the sewer network. The designer should attach a copy of the files used in the design the network.
  • Overall Proposal Quality: CSGWater will consider the proposal based on the ability of the designing organisation to present all necessary information for the design of the network in a clear and organized manner.

To complete this task CSGWater has indicated to your manager that they will only accept models developed in SewerGems.

Finally, to demonstrate your understanding of pipe networks, this assessment task should also include an Appendix that provides the outcomes of your second practical task on pipe networks.
