Demonstrate the basis of the engineering principles of a

Group Design Project

Introduction

This is an assignment concentrated to tackle civil engineering problems and design solutions in groups and individually in a way which reflects as much as possible the environment in the industry. It helps students to provide adequate ability of analyzing and designing simple to complex structures in civil engineering area for students of Civil Engineering program. Students are exposed to the concepts, principles tools and techniques of analysis and design of structure right away from initial conceptual design to final construction implementation. This assessment also help students to write a technical report to address the design work implemented to clients, subcontractors etc. This design practice should investigate sustainability and safety considerations should be embodied in the design process.

Outcomes of the assignment

1. Demonstrate the basis of the engineering principles of a range of civil engineering disciplines such as structures, highways, Geotechnology and water engineering necessary to tackle problems and design solutions associated with multi-disciplinary design projects.

2. Apply those principles to realistic cases of sufficient complexity to require judgment in the selection of and application of appropriate design principles and material use.

3. Interpret design data in terms of the underlying engineering principles embodied in codes of practice.

4. In response to a relevant engineering problem, carry out calculations that lead to a solution, at the level expected within the profession of a new graduate engineer.

5. Present relevant information and calculations in a clear and unambiguous way.

Assignment tasks

Part A - Group Design Project

Preliminary Study and Proposal of design project:

In the Part A of Group Design Project, Preliminary Study and Proposal of Design project submission to faculty approval, your group will be responsible to perform preliminary study including study of location and then come up complete planning and scheduling of how you are going to do this project to achieve assigned learning outcomes.

Following are the expected tasks during completion of Part A:

1. During this phase, the group will prepare two pages to three page document supporting their idea and implementation. Students need to briefly explain how they are going to achieve the tasks with in due date. How they have divided the work with in group and what are the responsibilities assigned to individual students.

2. Along with material usage, sustainability and aesthetics should be considered as part of evaluation.

Part B - Group Design Project

Detailed design report covering all learning outcomes and addressing the requirements of task 2 including final poster/presentation

You are required to come up with a complete project preparation for a warehouse with minimum 30000 m2 plinth area (assuming 5/6 groups, each group will select different type of warehouse depending on their purpose of use).

Your work should include preliminary survey, site investigation, layout planning with approaches and parking, architectural planning and drawings, structural analysis and design (of steel, reinforced cement concrete and concrete structures) and general specifications writing.

Deliverables
- Digital/PDF building layout and plans
- A 3D model of the warehouse
- An analysis and design with structural drawings
- Final report including general specification as mentioned below
- Provide a rough cost estimate of the project at planning and design stage
- PowerPoint presentation to explain their work

While designing these issues should be addressed:
- Functional / Operational-Account for Functional Needs,
- Productive-Ensure Reliable Systems and Spaces,
- Secure / Safe- Fire Protection,
- Secure / Safe-Security for Building Occupants and Assets,
- Sustainable-Optimize Energy Use,
- Sustainable-Enhance Indoor Environmental Quality

General specifications should include but not limited to:
- Excavation and earth work
- Use of explosives
- Anti-termite treatment
- Concrete work
- Concreting
- Form work
- Hollow block work
- Water proofing, damp proofing and insulation
- Wall, floor and ceiling finishes
- Metal work
- Aluminium doors and windows
- Carpentry and joinery
- Painting and decorating
- Thermal insulation
- Electro-mechanical works
- Plumbing and drainage

Define the physical layout and related attributes of a warehouse as mentioned below. Warehouse layout might include:
- Zones
- Locations
- Equipment
- Stations
