Assignment: Dietary analysis

Purpose - To demonstrate basic competency in recording and analysing dietary habits using a nutrition smartphone app

Develop skills in assessing an individual's dietary intake

Preamble - In the western world, we are spoiled for choice when it comes to food options, but are our diets optimal for health and fitness goals? Does one diet fit all or should we be changing our eating habits to meet our requirements? In this assignment you will be asked to select a client and using peer-reviewed evidence design an eating plan that supports your clients dietary needs and goals for example: high carbohydrate diet, or high fat, or high protein.

In order to complete this assignment. you will be required to download the FREE version of MyFitnessPal app onto your phone or tablet or create an online account before week 2.

You will also complete a basic understanding of the app in your week 2 tutorial.

You must select ONE of the following clients:

1. Greg is 26 years old Club Rugby player He is 178cm, 84kg with 12% body fat. Greg is wanting to gain another 5kg within the next three months for the up-coming rugby season He is moderately active, undertaking resistance training three days per week (1 hr per session.) and attending two team training sessions (2 hours) per week. Greg believes a high carbohydrate diet provides him with sufficient fuel to meet his training and playing needs. His macronutrient composition is as follows: 60% Carbohydrates, 15% Protein, 25% Fat

2. Peter is a 29 years old cyclist He is 172cm tall, weighs 684 with 14% body fat. He would like to maintain body weight for an upcoming race in 3 months' time. He has a heavy activity load training 6 days per week, cycling three hours per day and does two lower body weight sessions per week. Peter is interested in pursuing a high fat diet because he has heard that it supports endurance training. His macronutrient composition is as follows 10% Carbohydrates, 20% Protein, 70% Fat

3. Louise is a 45 year old female office worker who wants to lose 15kg within one year. She is 165cm tall and weighs 80kg, body fat 35%. She walks three days per week and has started doing a one-hour Yoga class at the gym twice per week, making her activity level light. Louisa's friends have started a high protein diet and she is interested to see if the diet he her lose weight. Her macronutrient composition is as follows. 45% Carbohydrate, 35% Protein, 20% Fat

You will also need to enter all of the Client's details in the MyFitnessPal app, including: Age, Sex, Weight, Height, % body fat, level of activity, special requirements, goals regarding weight (eg gain, maintenance. loss), macronutrient contribution split (eg 50% CHO, 20% PRO, 30% FAT). Ensure all units of measurement within the Client profile are in metric, ie weight in kg, height in cm, energy in kJ.

Responses:

On a cover page, identify the client you have selected and outline their basic information, including: Name: age; body weight and percentage body fat activity level; goal and the daily kilojoule requirement estimated by MyFitnessPal and macronutrient split.

Develop a 7-day eating plan, using the estimated energy requirement by MyFirtnessPal, to meet the goals and requirements of your client. Provide a meal plan of the foods you have selected for each day and justify why you have selected specific foods when designing your meal plan.

Using peer-reviewed research, outline how the macronutrient eating plan you have designed will meet your Client's health and training requirements. For example, if you have designed and eating plans that is high in protein so your client can lose weight, what evidence exists to support this approach? (750-1000 words).

Using the following formulas (outlined below): Harris-Benedict, Cunningham, Schofield and Mifflin-St Jeor, calculate your client's daily energy requirements (show all working).

Comment on how closely your calculations for each formula match the daily kilojoule requirement estimated by MlyFitnessPal and explain they may differ.

- Describe 7 variables that influence the calculation of daily energy requirements

- Using peer-reviewed evidence. outline 5 factors that may negatively impact on your client's capacity to remain committed to their eating plan
