Demonstrate an understanding for the ways in which science

Critique: Connecting science practices with educational practices.

Assessment task link to unit learning outcomes: Successful completion of this task will demonstrate student knowledge and skills in the following unit learning outcomes;

1. articulate how they have extended their current knowledge, skills and abilities needed as a science educator

2. demonstrate an understanding for the ways in which science responds to changing technological and social change

3. demonstrate engagement with contemporary practices of science

4. demonstrate the connections between professional understandings of science practices and one's educational practices.

Details of task: To complete this second assessment task you will be required to visit a laboratory/research workplace to determine the range of activities undertaken in that context. Following discussion and observations, describe the range of views of the Nature of Science apparent in the laboratory/research workplace paying particular attention to what you believe is the prevailing view. Following the visit, you should then undertake a CoRe analysis to translate authentic scientific practices into engaging classroom learning experiences. This critique will be informed by:

- the experiences of authentic science that you sought in your study of this unit
- the knowledge and understanding you have been developing in your study of this unit
- the knowledge and insights you gained through a laboratory/research workplace visit and your interview with a scientist undertaken specifically for this unit. You should formulate an interview schedule (intended questions) to be used during the workplace visit and include this as an appendix.

Word count/equivalent: 5000 words

Presentation requirements: The Critique can be in a range of file formats with .docx, .pdf, pez, or html preferred.

Individual assessment in group tasks: Although opportunities are provided in workshops and online forums for students to undertake collaborative activities and share research findings, all assessment tasks completed are to be individual work.

Criteria for marking: Understanding of the selected concepts and literature presented in the critique.

- Selection of texts, including meta reflection of your Learning Log to enable a robust engagement with ideas presented in the unit.

- Using the CoRes plan an authentic science learning experience. Use your Learning Log and views present in your representation of NoS to provide evidence of why you believe this experience is important to teach.

- Drawing on your learning from this unit discuss your criteria for selecting what is important for creating authentic science learning experiences.

- Detail how your knowledge and experiences (site visit, Learning Log and Five Cognitive Levels of Engagement) have helped to influence your selection of authentic science learning experiences.

- Professional presentation, including clarity of expression, coherence, fluency, word count equivalence and application of referencing protocols APA 6.
